Well, personally, I adore "People Look East" for Advent, "Sussex Christmas Carol" for Christmas, and "The Band of Children" for Epiphany. However, you're looking for secular pop/rock-type stuff, aren't you? What about the song that *really* tells it like it is: "The St Stephen's Day Murders" by Elvis Costello? You gotta love a song that works "that drink made of girders" into the lyrics. (May I also sneak in mentions of "2000 Miles" by The Pretenders, "River" by Joni Mitchell [the cry-into-your-Molson Christmas-song for Canadians, especially since Marie closed down her other blog] and "Father Christmas" by Ray Davies? No? Well, I do also love "A Fairytale of New York". But apparently so does everyone else.)
"the boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay" - I've always found that line inexplicably moving.
I'd add Darlene Love singing her heart out on "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" from the Phil Spector Chrimbo album as a favourite of mine. And I'd nominate "Just Like Christmas" by Low for the acclaimed "Best use of jingle bells in a cool indie song. Ever" award.

'Santa Baby' by Marilyn Monroe. And I'm also another person who finds the line about the NYPD choir very moving.
I found an incredibly sexy Kylie version of that on YouTube which I nearly posted as option three, but the problem was is that the entire set-up suggests that Kylie is going to strip - she's wearing a long gown which ties at the back, and at one point throws off her furs - and through the whole thing I was waiting for her to take her clothes off, and she doesn't. And if I found that frustrating as a heterosexual woman, I thought it might actually kill some of my male readers.
OK, this will age me but does anyone else out there remember Jonah Louis'Can You stop the Cavalry (Wish I was at Home for Christmas)? must have been about 1980-ish. It's probably just the vaguely New-Romantic army uniform he was wearing in the video but it's always stuck in my mind!

I like "I was born on Christmas day" by Saint Etienne. I am always surprised when I hear it in shops around this time of year. Though I second both Can you stop the Calvary and Low.

Thanks for posting that missbabs! i thnk this is very significant evidence for the following reasons:
1. He goes for the kiss but she pushes him away.
2. The BBC chose to cut *before* she pushes him away.
That can mean one of two things. Either that there was a fling (he goes for the kiss) but it is now over (she pushes him away plus beeb does not have better footage of monkey business to use) OR that there *is* a fling but Flavia doesn't want people to know about it so won't let Matt kiss her on camera.
The other thing to note is, as Alice pointed out in the comments to another thread, just how jealous Matt looks when he is sitting on the sofa with Flavia and Vincent.
I'm super-impressed with the producers for abusing a young man's feelings and getting Vincent and Flavia together constantly, just in order to ramp up the tension for we grateful viewers. Kudos to those stone-hearted folk!

Okay, I'm not proud of this, but I cannot bear it any longer: 1) Marilyn Monroe *never* recorded "Santa Baby". Look it up. This is yet another internet-engendered myth. 2) "Winter Wonderland" is not a Christmas song. This is nothing to do with being secular; there are plenty of secular songs about Christmas. ("Santa Baby" for example.) But you can sing "Winter Wonderland", "Let It Snow", "Baby It's Cold Outside", or even "Jingle Bells" at any time of year, providing it's snowing (or in the case of "BICO", even if it's reasonably chilly).
