Help required!

You lot are amazing. I write about having trouble with my computer, you post detailed instructions on how to fix it. I write about my mind turning to mush, you post links to interesting free lectures at UCL. I write about not being able to find Dick in a Box, you post Dick in a Box. It's like being friends with Google.

So here's another one. (This may not be my most interesting post ever.) I currently own a pair of Sennheiser PX200 headphones. I love them in almost every way. They are small. They are light. They are folding. They are comfortable. They give good sound. They are closed, so no noise leakage, and they don't bother other people. However, they have a loose wire, so one ear keeps cutting out unless I hold the cable at a certain angle. That's the second time this has happened with this model of headphones - the first was within a week, so I sent them back - and a perusal of the cheaper Sennheiser phones on Amazon throws up at least one "cable got loose" review per model so they are obviously all poor quality. Which means I really don't want to waste money on another pair like this.

Here's the question: can you recommend some decent headphones, not too pricy, which have many or (dare I dream it) all the qualities of my px200s, aside from the lousy cable?

I use these ones, and have done for years, as has Dan. The sound quality is excellent, no noise leakage, not too pricy, and they come with 3 sizes of soft bud (a bit like earplugs) so you can use the one that fits, and they are super-comfortable (I can't use the hard in-ear ones, they hurt after about 10mns).

My devotion to the HD-25s as the studio and DJ monitoring standard is well documented, but they are not light, foldable, small and certainly aren't cheap!

I would say that I was listening to Fake Plastic Trees on them over the weekend, and heard a really clear guitar part in the song that I had never heard previously. After 13 years of listening to it!

They are the ones for me...

Thanks Colette. I have ordered some, and if they're great, that's great, and if they're not I have the extra bonus of being able to give you a really hard time about it, which is worth the money...

I would just like to say - thanks for nothing Marie. I have not been able to get that sodding Dick in a Box out of my head for THREE DAYS.

I tend to find it rears up (so to speak) when I am making a numerical list. So: 1 - cut a hole in a box!

(For earworm, try singing Yellow Submarine. Always works for me, though you do end up with Yellow Submarine stuck in your head instead.)

Ooo, Marie, do please tell your experience with the Sony earphones... I've been needing to get some earphones myself but have always hated in-ear ones. These, however, look pretty good! I am all bated breath.

I'd be surprised if you find the Sony 'phones a match for the Sennheisers, which are generally recognised as the benchmark when it comes to sound quality.

Sennheiser UK offer a 2 year guarantee on the PX200s; even if you like the Sonys you could get them to send you a replacement to keep as a spare.

Most headphones regardless of make are prone to cable problems because the cables tend to get involuntarily tugged from time to time. When it is the solder joint with an earcup that fails, it is rarely difficult to gently prise the cup open and resolder the connection, which will often be considerably stronger than the original. The last phones I repaired for a friend pulled the cone loose inside the cup the next time he ran for the phone with them on, the joint was so strong! So how handy are you with a soldering iron?

More expensive Sennheiser phones have replaceable cables which saves a lot of hassle when they start playing up.
