(Techie update: got the firewire, connected the computers, opened up my other computer on my laptop, but couldn't figure out how to actually get at all the stuff that I needed, especially because most are on e-mail but when I opened Thunderbird remotely it only had emails on it up to June, and then as I was figuring that out my desktop disappeared bafflingly off my laptop, I can't get it back, so I will probably have to buy a new monitor, which I don't want and will be a total waste of money, because the only reason I'm going to use it is to get everything I need off my desktop and onto a memory stick so I can put it on the laptop and then never use the desktop again so that everything is in one place, because one thing I have learned is that even with a manual and a firewire I don't know how to fileshare, unless anyone has any better ideas, but I have to do it this week because I am in big trouble with all the stuff I haven't got, and I am a bit annoyed by the whole kerfuffle and can't realy afford to go buying monitors I don't want, also while we're on the subject how do you sync two versions of iTunes so I can get all my music onto the laptop as well, and gaaaaaah.)

As someone else said in a previous comment, you need a techie friend with a small monitor that they can bring to your house. Sorry, this is probably not that helpful, but I am too far away.
1. Unplug Mac Mini, head over to parents (don't forget the cables, including mini-DVI adapter), plug in to monitor there. Do whatever you need, get data onto memory stick.
2. Then chuck Mini my way to use as Linux file server...

I have no helpful comments to add, but just to cheer you up, I DID email you last night about watching a certain Mr Tennant in LLL, but you probably haven't got it. Am about to blog it now. I will try and find a nice picture.xxx
Parents don't have monitors, they only use laptops :-(

The sad thing is we are posting comments on something we have already discussed by phone!!! :)
Firewire cable method:
1) plug Firewire cable into both laptop and desktop.
2) Restart desktop while holding down T on desktop's keyboard.
3) Desktop's hard drive should then appear as a hard drive on laptop's desktop.
4) Double click on icon, then find Users>Marie (or whatever you've chosen as your user name)>Library
5) Your Thunderbird files will be in either one of two places, depending on the version you're using:
a) Thunderbird>Profiles
b) Application Support>Thunderbird>Profiles
6) Inside the Profiles folder there'll be another folder with a gibberish name. That'll be where all your files are. All you have to do is copy this folder into the equivalent place on your laptop and when you next launch Thunderbird on your laptop, it should be available as the default user, if you've never run it before. If you have used it before, you should be able to hold down the alt/option key at start up and pick the desktop data as a new profile.
As for iTunes, are you simply copying the library over or are you combining two libraries? If the former, all you really need to do is copy over the contents of your Music folder's iTunes folder from your desktop to your laptop, replacing the existing files.
If the latter, it's a bit more complicated:
1) Connect everything up by Firewire
2) Launch iTunes on your laptop
3) Pick "Add to Library" function from the File menu
4) Select from the mounted desktop hard drive the following folder Users>Maries>Music>iTunes>iTunes Music
5) That should then just copy over all your music files to your laptop and then add them to the iTunes library. All the play counts, etc, will be set back to zero though.

I have succeeded in moving my itunes desktop music across to my laptop but I haven't figured out how to replace the laptop version by the desktop version - ie when I open itunes on my laptop it just uses the old version. I can go into my desktop music folder and play songs off it, but I have to authorise them one by one. Do you know of a faster way of doing this?
About to try Thunderbird...
If you quit iTunes, eject the Mac mini hard drive from your laptop's desktop then re-launch iTunes, iTunes should then spot the fact that the hard drive is missing and go looking for the music on your laptop. Fingers crossed (which really does work, honest. Computers know if you're not crossing them).
You shouldn't then need to reauthorise more than one purchased tune per Apple Store account (so if you've got 15 tunes from seven people, you'll only need to authorise seven tunes, one from each person).
Even after deleting the old iTunes folder from my laptop and putting the new one in its place, it still opens the old folder. I can import songs in one at a time, but when I try to play them it asks for authentication, but when I give it it just asks for authentication again, even though I just authenticated and I got a confirmation message.
I didn't cross my fingers. That was the problem.
Haven't even got as far as Thunderbird yet.

You've probably just put the old one in the Trash. Either you need to delete the old one by emptying the trash or you need to go into the iTunes preferences, click on the "Advanced" tab and change the location of the iTunes Music folder location: at the moment, iTunes is 'helpfully' tracking the old folder.
No way! I'm too scared to delete the trash! What if I've put important things in there?
Anyway I have made an appointment at the Genius Bar for later in the week - I figure that as long as all the files are on my computer they can put them in the right places for me and *then* I can start permanently deleting stuff.
