Bananas

I have travelled quite extensively in the USA and one thing I have noticed is that whenever I go to someone's home it always has a very distinctive smell. Sometimes it's not in their apartment, sometimes it's just in the staircase, but I smell it everywhere I go. It's strong and sweet and has a tinge of rot but it's not exactly unpleasant. I have never figured out what caused it - a particular type of cleaning product was my best guess. I just think of it as American House Smell and until yesterday I had never smelt it anywhere else.

Last night I came home from a weekend away and my house smelt of American House Smell. It was very disorienting as my house was just where I had left it ie not in the USA. Eventually I tracked down the source of the smell to the fruitbowl, which contained three very overripe bananas. I can therefore announce that the whole of the United States of America smells of overripe bananas.

I wish I could segue from that into talking about how the Oscar decisions were bananas, but actually they were pretty much exactly the same as the Baftas except for a choice of Best Film, No Country For Old Men, which (a) was much better than Atonement and (b) poo-pooed my theory that NCFOM and There Will Be Blood would split the Important Movie vote. There's no point me repeating the comments I made then. Never mind. I'm off to surf the net for pictures of Diablo Cody's million dollar diamond shoes.

Funnily enough, my daugher said recently 'why does our house always smell of bananas?'

Probably because no-one ever eats the bloomin' things. Either that or we've some American ancestry I wasn't aware of.

It has long been the tradition at our house to get in large bags of tortilla chips and potato chips (crisps) with the appropriate dips for Oscar Night. It's a rare treat, so we overindulge, and this, plus the fatuous red carpet stuff and the not much better stuff that followed has left me with a wild junk hangover. (Too bad we don't have any bananas on hand; I could probably do with the potassium. Instead, I finished the chips. Hair of the dog that bit me...)

It being the 80th anniversary, I found myself feeling slightly appalled at the parade of "Best Movies" ("That won?") I couldn't even remember what won last year. I'm sure that Marion Cotillard was fabulous as Edith Piaf, but I've had it up to here with gorgeous young actresses being made ugly/fat/old and being told how great (and brave) they are. How about employing some genuinely ugly/fat/old actresses? Hence, two fine performances of actresses turning in subtle and nuanced portryals of characters close to their actual ages (Julie Christie and Ellen Page) were passed over.

Peta, I've been struggling with the hyperlink in the reply field too. It's something to do with the HTML "anchor" tag "a" as in: href="http://www.rexfeatures.com/set/739721"
(Did it work this time?)

I think they're rough as old shit and I'd rather spend $1 million on bananas. But each to their own...

I wish I could say I've never been guilty of leaving overripe bananas out for just a liiiiiitle too long, but, alas, I do it frequently. It's probably because people are forced to buy an entire bunch at once.

Maybe we're doing it on purpose. It could be an attempt on the part of Americans to collectively yak the chain of all foreign visitors. Your post is proof that it's working...:-)
