The Dead iPod Post

My iPod has died. It has ceased to be. It is an ex-iPod.

It wasn't murder - I have done nothing that could have killed it. Nor did it die of old age: it was only two years old. So I can only assume it was suicide, maybe because it had heard the rumour (true) that I was planning to download 'All Night Long' by Lionel Ritchie to listen to on it. A machine can only be pushed so far.

So now I have to buy a new iPod, and when I say have to, I mean have to. Having had one I can no longer live without it. I am breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking of taking the bus without my lovely Pod (though the writer in me in enjoying eavesdropping on other people's conversations). I can't think of anything in my life that I treasure more, aside from my dishwasher. It is an essential.

I do however resent the price of a standard iPod which is £159, quite a lot when you consider I have to pay that once every two years. (Nano is too small.) I no longer feel like I own an iPod, more like I am renting one at vast expense. I can't think of anything else that I own which just stops working like that so suddenly, so traumatically, after such a short time, and is completely unfixable. It reminds me of some relationships I have had. These are not happy thoughts.

There is no point to this post. Just moaning.

RIP iPod.

Get and iPod touch...

Not only do you get all the music and video loveliness - but email, web browsing, calendar, etc...

And you can always pick up wifi when walking round the city!

I can't go anywhere without mine now. Often keeping notes on it for random thoughts popping up in my head!

Pete Buck of REM has 5 iPods when he goes on tour as he 'can't get by with the same 10,000 tracks'.

I'm with Chris on this one. Since getting my iPod Touch, I never leave home without it.

Especially for you, as you live in London and get free Wifi pretty much everywhere, you would then have a mobile Marie Central: music, blogging, emails and surfing! Not to mention maps (no need fo ran A-Z), weather (no need for a brollie), Notes (Oh what a good book idea), YouTube (err), Stocks (OK, I'm over-egging this one now).

It does cost more mind (although I got mine given to me for my 40th)

Once you Touch, you won't ever want to go back to click-wheeling...

I've just had a thought. Seeing as we are discussing you and a piece of technology, are you quite sure that:

a) the battery is simply not dead
b) the USB cable to charge the iPod is working OK
c) you are in fact thinking of an iPod and not your toaster

Considering our past conversations when you called me in a panic over some "broken" bit of IT kit...

Just a thought.

my first ipod died after 2 years too. have you tried resetting or restoring? restoring is a little more complicated as you have to erase the whole thing but it fixed mine for a while the first time it died.

My commiserations. Dead iPods are a sad thing indeed. I've had two die on more before now. Usually it's a dead battery, but restoring, etc is a good idea first.

You can get a new battery for about a tenner, but you have to open the case up, which can be a little scary and leave marks. Cheaper than a new one though and the new battery lasts longer than the older ones.

If it were me, I'd buy an iPod touch, although WWDC is just round the corner and Steve Jobs is no doubt going to be announcing new iPhones and more, just to make whatever you buy now obsolete inside of a month. Which is typical.

I think i may be one of the very few people who doesnt own an ipod.

I am so sorry for your loss though, I seem to have an MP3 death every year. Every year at around January it just seems to die on me I have to buy a new one.

I don't even own an MP3, though of course my twelve year old does... I love the whole Ipod idea, but fear as I fritter far too much time away on ephemera (though of course I don't count visiting this blog as such!)... I would be obsessed with loading songs on and not get anything else done...

Bro - a b and c all verified, though I can't pretend that I didn't deserve the question.

Rachel / mediumrob - how do I restore?

Mediumrob - what is WWDC?

I very much doubt it's a battery problem as am one of the few people who has never notice any deterioration in battery life in my iPod, and also thte screen kept going funny when I tried to switch it on before it finally totally died, so I suspect it's something a bit more severe than that. Still, doesn't hurt to get it checked.

WWDC is the Apple WorldWide Developer Conference, where Steve Jobs will do his speech, usually culminating in "one more thing" when he drops a bombshell on the audience, in the form of some snazzy new product. (Sorry for jumping in MediumRob)

I think that the Touch probably won't change much though: if you watch the SDK-launch webcast for iPhone and iPodTouch, the main additions coming in the next revision of the software are Microsoft Exchange functionality and the ability to install native apps. In any case, this upgrade will be something like $2-5 dollars as an upgrade through iTunes (or free for iPhone).

But you never can tell with bees/Apple. They might add a camera, iChat, etc. Who knows?

Don't forget 3G, my friend! At least on the iPhone. And that'll be a hardware thing, not a software thing. Plus underestimate Apple's ability to turn what should be a simple software update into a "buy our latest product since we won't be giving any of its new features to the previous generation" - which it's done for the last three or four revs of iPod.

But don't underestimate Marie's ability to talk! An iPhone at current O2 tariffs would bankrupt her in weeks....

Sorry Sis! ;)

I'm not 100% because I have a Mac and restoring would be different. i found out how to do it on the apple troubleshooting website so I'm sure it has a windows explanation as well. It's worth trying anyway

Fear not Rachel - I converted Marie to Macdom a long time ago!

In that case, you need to go to disk utility and erase it. this might be helpful http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
