Reality Check

The boiler broke down yesterday. I didn't notice until my fingers began to turn blue. So I called out the emergency plumber, who came very quickly to tell me exactly how much less fun I was going to be able to afford this month than I had expected.

When he got here, he asked for a parking permit and I gave him one, mentioning as I did that the local traffic warden is actually quite a nice guy. "That's not possible, is it?" he said. "It's like the only good German is a dead German."

And so the Obama wave of goodwill officially dies.

(Does it belittle me to reveal that, as a writer, I found the line so utterly shocking and brilliant that I felt it was worth the £50 call-out fee alone?)

Even though my ma in law is German I have to say that line is horribly funny. But given my recent experiences with clampers I'd use it to relate to them instead.

PS Did you see that Barack had to repeat his oath again because he cocked it up? Apparently the White House doesn't have any bibles though, so he couldn't swear on one...

Not just because I'm biased, but was the judge who was saying the oath who cocked it up. Conspiracy theory suggests that he did it on purpose so that Obama wouldn't be the President in constitutional terms. I'm not sure about that... but if you watch the film, it's very obvious that Obama knows what it's supposed to be and it's John Roberts who gets it wrong.

Yes you're right, the judge cocked it up and then Barack did. I thought when I was watching it that Barack got it wrong, but he was clearly ploughing ahead with the version practised. The rerun was to prevent conspiracy theorists running amok, but if they didn't have a bible does tht STILL mean he hasn't been sworn in properly???

Interesting! The guy who came to service our boiler was an evangelical Christian, who was much impressed by our assorted icons around the house.
Technically our outlet was too high, but he put an extra piece of pipe on it so that it came within the regulations and made the boiler legal, for free! Amen!

What about a German traffic warden?

The only German I have ever met was a friend of my girlfriend at the time. She asked me to turn my music down while staying at our flat. Volume level was about 4 or 5, but she was reading and it was putting her off.

She was almost a dead German as a result. If I had beaten her to death with a CD case I could have reported back to you on the accuracy or otherwise of your boiler man's comment.

Marie you are right. A day after Obama is President his wave of goodwill is officially dying. Even here in the comments. The saying from your plumber is international - we have it too with other nations. But we shouldnt use such a phrase. I`m sad that some people here take it. Dunno where all of them live. I`m german and I hope I`m nice and I will have a long live!!! See you!
