Not being able to locate what I needed in Foyles, whose stationery department focuses staunchly on the gift market, I am directed to Ryman's down the street, which I am promised has the more functional stuff that I need. Gah! It was like some kind of hideous stationery death zone, full of ugly diaries with dull faux-leather covers, thin-papered notebooks bound in hard blackish plasticated cardboard, ringbinders in unpleasant colours that though aiming at dayglo somehow suck the light out from the room, workmanlike disposable biros, and not a single thing that might get a child (let alone an adult) inspired. I left with an ugly but useful wall calendar with a grid the exact size that I needed but which makes my heart sink every time I look at it, some run-of-the-mill post-its, a perversely repulsive pink ringbinder which I decided was preferable to tedious black, and some hole reinforcers. Utterly depressing in every way. Where is a girl to go for stationery that is functional, inexpensive, but retains some intrinsic beauty of design?

Also there is a very good shop - don't know what it is called - a few doors along from the photographers gallery, on that road between St. Martin's Lane and Charing Cross Road (Quinto is on the corner). It's got a mixture of functional and really nice things.

There's always Paper-Ya on Granville Island, you know, if you're ever in Vancouver. I've spent a sinful amount of money in that store. And not regretted one penny. http://www.paper-ya.com/
I did indeed visit that very store when I was in Vancouver in February, and the only reason I didn't blow my entire Canadian advance there was that I had a long walk planned for the afternoon and I couldn't carry much with me.

This is the most perfect stationery shop I have ever visited. It is the paperie of your dreams. Unfortunately it is located in Sydney. But it seriously might be worth considering emigrating.

The best journals you could have are at http://www.bookjournals.com. They look even better in person. Of course, you'd have to find out what it takes to get them to England, but perhaps if you just tell them you are a celebrity in Canada they would cut you a deal. Or charge you more - we Americans have a complex relationship with Canadian celebrities after all those Neil Young records.
