Doctor Who: Partners in Crime

Oh, oh, oh. I liked it. I liked it a lot. Mainly because of the sheer bliss of having a companion who can act. (I sort of feel guilty about mentioning this; I have read and seen a fair few interviews with Freema Agyeman aka Martha now, and she comes across as an extremely nice person, and it makes me will Martha to be a better character, but she isn't. Because I like Freema so much, I'm going to try to believe that this is because the Martha writing is below par, but what I really suspect is that Freema was hired and kept on because everyone in question wants to work with her, but that doesn't stop her from being on the mediocre side. Anyway.) I LOVE Donna. I love the Donna dynamic. I love that Donna is excited by the prospects that the Doctor's Time Lordiness has and yet is not overawed by the Doctor himself. I love that Donna is no ingenue. I love that Donna is funny. I love that having a funny, mature companion gives the writers twice as many people to write smart, sassy dialogue for, which makes each episode twice as smart and sassy. Also, I loved the cute little creatures made of fat, though I reckon I will be in a minority regarding this. They are adorable! I want one as a pet! Plus I think I would enjoy having one better than I enjoy having my muffin top at the moment. And at the very least they gave Donna a classic line: "I'm waving to fat". And I love that any prospect of a Donna-Doctor love dynamic has been quashed from the very start. ("I want a mate." "YOU WANT TO MATE????") That was definitely the weakest part of the previous season and if we're going with writing-at-fault it certainly did Martha the least amount of favours.

Nice touches: all the in-jokes. "You're a journalist? Make it up, then." RTD speaking from the heart. And responding to all the blogger complaints re Donna's screechiness in The Runaway Bride by having her first encounter with the Doctor be conducted entirely in mime. And Rose's reappearance at the end, in manner of Chris Tarrant of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: holding out the cheque that has just been won (Donna) but then snatching it back: "But we don't want to give you that!" And then dangling the larger cheque that is just out of reach (Rose.) For the record, I'm in two minds about the return of Rose. I like it, because I like Rose, and I like the fact that the return of Rose creates a nice long story arc from the very start (one of my major Who complaints is that the story arcs aren't long enough. A few mentions of disappearing bees aren't quite enough.) On the other hand I thought the departing Rose storyline was perfect, and this reappearance could have a whiff of Bobby Ewing coming out of the shower. I will wait and see.

Not so nice touches: the villain wasn't terribly villainous, which added a soupcon of 'so what' to proceedings. RTD's hair in Confidential. Probably too busy to trim.

Ultimately, lots of enthusiasm from here regarding the forthcoming series, and since I've read previews that categorise this as the lousy episode and next week's as the good one, my general feeling is: happy days!

Oh, and Tennant was hot. Rowr. Wore the glasses too. I suppose it has all been filmed by now, but after an entire series without it, PLEASE, Russell, could you have the man lick something this time around? Please??

All in all, I didn't think it was a classic episode, more a pleasingly enjoyable one, but I am excited at the way that it sets up a new Doctor-Companion dynamic that I think I am going to really enjoy over the coming weeks. Huzzah!

I think I agree with just about every sentence of that bar the villain not being too villainous, which I thought was a nice touch and the real villains were the guys in the upside down rouletter wheel; and I'm not sure about DT being asked to lick all sorts of things - I'm neutral on that. Other than that, total agreement with you.

Maybe it was special and I will just have to treasure that one time in Tooth and Claw. But how hard would it be to give the fellow an ice cream?

Wow, I thought people were gonna hate this. I'm so happy I was wrong!

"PLEASE, Russell, could you have the man lick something this time around? Please??"

He just doesn't listen to the fans, does he? ;)

Great review.

Hey, just discovered your blog after following a link from Rob's site. Good review and similar to my own thoughts. Although we'll have to agree to differ about Martha :-)

The "Bobby Ewing / Rose" fear is one which I shared but I was so blown away by seeing her here that all my concerns have gone.

No mention of Bernard Cribbins though... wasn't he just the greatest cameo ever?

The Pack family verdict was that it was a bit silly with no real sense of danger, not even 'mild peril'. Fun though.

We all liked the Rose ending and Ethan and Martha already have theories as to what is going on there.

I am not a fan of Catherine Tate's comedy series. Like Ab Fab, it has never made me so much as titter - ever. But I thought she was hilarious on Jonathan Ross.

An interesting piece in yesterday's Times about how Battlestar Gallactica is miles better. Worth a read if you can find it.

I thought it was greater. Not the best one I've ever seen, but it bodes well for the rest of the series.

I was wondering what you thought... when I heard Rose was coming back and seeing the previews of her looking all appalled, I was hoping for a big swooping-in to help save the day around ep 11, but now I'm just afraid that her return is going to be all about her trying to find her way back across the void, following trouble just like Donna did, so she can be reunited with the Doctor and cry some more. I do not want to be right. I want Rose to have moved on and be kick-ass.

I wasn't overly impressed I have to say (and ever so slightly disappointed).

It wasn't scary in the slightest for a start and (as Scott said) there was no sense of peril. But, as I said to my fellow viewer, that's just about allowable because it's an 'easing you in gently' first episode where they set the scene and the dynamics for the Doctor/Donna relationship.

I should also mention that I find Donna ever so slightly annoying (less so in this episode than the last one she was in) and hope I stop feeling like I'm watching a Catherine Tate character.

I thought the Rose appearance was a surprising twist (fellow viewer called it 'stupid') and that's enough to keep me hooked (not that I needed Rose to appear to keep me hooked to Doctor Who but it's still a good one).

I look forward to episode 2.

In Due South, Paul Gross used to lick stuff all the time. So it can be done.

I loved it. I want one of those little Adipose things aswell, so adorable! Im with you all the way on the DT licking front! Donna has surprised me i wasnt so sure about her but now i think shes great, with her classic line "You're not mating with me sunshine!"

Oh and totally off topic but i found out that you are coming to my local library in June. See you there.

I agree with you on everything but the aliens, which I just thought were silly. But otoh, I quite like silliness in Dr Who, and the rest of it was so much fun I can forgive them for that. (But really all that CGI, and that was the best they could come up with?)
What with that and the snow on Sunday morning, my children thought they had gone to heaven...

Excellent news, Kymz, make sure you come and say hello.

I'm glad to see there is a groundswell of support regarding David Tennant's tongue. Let's make it happen. Can anybody design us a badge?
